Title:
Is there something like a specific “we” of the police?

Abstract:
Ongoing police-officers seem to know a lot about what their job will be like and what kind of training they need to do a good job. They often talk about the police as “us” as if they were already officers on duty. This made us wonder, if there is sense of “we” specific to police forces. And if there was, what might it look like? We discussed the matter with first year students in the police course of our institution and analysed the results of these debates. The output is that there actually seems to be a very specific idea of the “we” of the police which is often connected with the metaphor of “out there on the street”.
