Title:
Communication in Police Operationsin cases of domestic violence

Abstract:
The present pilot study considered the issue in how far police officers of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate apply the communication strategies acquired during their initial education and training in the case of operations due to domestic violence. Furthermore, information was gathered concerning the degree of satisfaction experienced by victims of domestic violence as to police operations. To obtain relevant answers to the present issue, a partially standardized interview was designed. The interviews were carried out with eight victims of domestic violence. In order to warrant their comparability, the selection applied narrow criteria such as the victims’ age, nationality and when they had experienced their last exposure to violence followed by police operation. Having evaluated the interviews, we can state that the communication strategies acquired during education and training were partially made use of, yet, there still remains the need of amelioration. The overall picture of victims’ satisfaction with police operations is positive although critical aspects can still be recognized.
