Title:
Getting better without injuries: Representative simulations in police use of force training.

Abstract:
The sustainable development of problem solving skills that transfer into real world encounters is the underlying goal of police use of force (PUOF) training. The paper questions the problematic relation between training environment and real world encounters leading to a model for designing optimal learning environments in PUOF settings. Based on the paradigm of nonlinear pedagogy the concept of representative learning designs (RLD) is introduced. A Trade-off Model of Simulation Design points out how the critical relation between representativeness and safety in PUOF training can be managed professionally.
