Title:
The Application of Science in Everyday Life of Police Leaders – Process-related leadership and participative research

Abstract:
In this article the authors try to embed a classical instrument of police leadership, the so-called feedback method, into a modified process-related understanding of leadership and to rework it on the basis of participative social research. In a first step the authors develop critical preliminary theses regarding the current leadership discourse. In a second step the authors argue for a functional, application-oriented connection of normative and descriptive leadership theories. As an exemplary proposal the authors do work out the idea of a police leader as an “organizational mediator” in a process-related understanding of leadership. The potential of participative research methods, especially in the context of the stress field of “police and science”, will finally be illustrated using the example of the feedback method.
