What Makes a Police Operation at a Soccer Game Successful? Psychological Success Factors in a Completed Operation

Abstract:
Police operations at soccer events are one of the most com­mon in the riot police force. The success of the operation depends on many aspects, such as the potential for violence among fan groups, the security concept in the soccer stadium and even the assessment of the strength of the police force itself. Even psychological factors among the officials, both on duty as well as during the operations, have to be taken into account. These were subjects of a current investigation in connection with a major exercise conducted in a soccer stadium with prospective police officers (N=122). The personal character and attitude of the officers as well as teamwork were identified as key factors for the operation. From this, psychological recommendations for successful police policies were derived and presented.
