Trauma and dissociation – Survey regarding the current knowledge of police interrogators

When interrogating potentially traumatized witnesses, adequate knowledge regarding disorder-related memory impairment, reproduction difficulties and appropriate interrogation methods is of great importance The state of knowledge concerning trauma symptomatology and handling methods of 49 police officers in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany) was examined using a questionnaire Regarding dissociation and grounding techniques, less than 50 % of the presented infor­mation was known by the officers Compared to protection police officers, criminal police officers showed significantly better knowledge concerning dissociation, interrogation methods and grounding techniques Knowledge deficits should be counteracted using specific training measures
