Title:
Women in police leadership – a systematic review
Abstract:
The topic „women in police leadership“ is characterized by many approaches and phenomena. It is impossible to draw a distinct line between them due to certain overlaps in literature and research. The aim of this systematic review is to present approaches described in the literature. Furthermore, empirical studies investigating frequencies and barriers for women gaining a leadership position in police are reviewed and described using the standardized and manualized PRISMA review process. We identified 14 primary studies. Despite the lack of gender differences in skills and career motivation, women are exposed to significantly less favourable conditions. This study thus provides a basis for future research regarding women in police leadership.
