Title:
Generation Z has arrived in the police force - Looking at a new generation of investigators in the Berlin police
Abstract:
The article deals with members of the so-called Generation Z, i.e. the birth cohorts from 1995 to 2010, who have arrived in the professional world a few years ago and are now increasingly populating the police force - which they will inevitably shape in the long run. As each generation, Generation Z has its own set of values and behavioral patterns; for example, it is known to have grown up with the Internet and attributed with having a high interest in personal development and a deeper sense of purpose at work, while at the same time aiming to strictly separate work from their private life. Resulting implications for the police as an employer are discussed, and a qualitative survey of executives at the Berlin police is used to indicate how those junior officers have so far been perceived inside the police force.
