Title:
Shooting on moving targets

Abstract:
Hit rates of police officers in ongoing operations are significantly lower than in many shooting trainings. One of the reasons cited for this is the dynamic nature of the operational situation. In actual shootings, people who attack police officers often move. Accordingly, police officers then shoot at a moving target, whereas in classical firearms training, they often shoot at static targets. This study investigates how shooting performance changes when targets move in different ways. It is shown that speed and predictability of target movement are central to hit rates. In this context, the chosen shooting tactic does not influence the result. Therefore, it can be concluded that target movement is very significant in shootings and, thus, mandatory to be considered in training and education.
