Title:
Opt-in and opt-out in police bachelor degree programs?

Abstract:
Following the Kienbaum Report on the Functional Evaluation of the Police (1991), in several Länder and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the degree course was designated as the sole entry point to the full-time police service and the so-called medium career path was abolished, while other Länder and the BPol continued to offer a three-part career path. There was no evaluation of the course as an entry point to the PVD. There are, however, a number of disadvantages (or at least risks) in focusing on the degree course. These are discussed in the article, together with a consideration of the possibilities of moving from (academizized) training to a degree course or from a ‚discontinued‘ degree course to a police career.
