Title:
Police Universities for Applied Sciences

Abstract:
This article is a contribution to research on police academies in Germany. In a first step, the legal characteristics of police universities are elaborated and two existing organisational types of police universities of applied science are identified: Type university of applied science with departments for administrative studies and a department for police and the pure police university of applied science. These types of organisations are questioned as to the organisational scope for exchange and communication that they offer beyond the scope of police studies. Finally, the self-image of police academies themselves comes into focus, as an open question that touches the scientific proximity of these academies. Police universities struggle with the tense relationship between being close to science and being close to the authorities.
