Title:
The planning exercise board of the Baden-Württemberg Police University (HfPolBW) in use
Abstract:
Training police officers to act effectively poses the challenge of combining theoretical knowledge transfer with practical operational requirements. Police operations are often characterized by dynamic situations, insufficient information, uncertainty, and time pressure, and can only be trained for to a limited extent in a realistic manner. Against this background, this article examines the use of the planning exercise board at the Baden-Württemberg Police University (HfPol BW) as a didactic medium for promoting realistic learning. Based on learning and motivational psychology approaches as well as empirical findings from surveys, expert interviews, and pre-tests, the potential, limitations, and prospects of the method are analyzed. The results show that the training board supports action-oriented, multisensory, and motivational learning in particular and can thus make a relevant contribution to the further development of police training and continuing education.
